contra

A variant fiend with size that surpasses the Ninja Type and has more battle experience.
With a vicious appetite to go along with its enormous body, it gorges itself on anything it can get its hands on, both humans and other fiends alike.
A number of subspecies exist such as cyborgs and ones that have full body armor and wield electric magnetic yo-yos.

Obese-Type Fiends[3] are occasional enemies encountered during missions in Contra: Rogue Corps.

Description

As their name implies, these enemies are large humanoids sometimes lacking true limbs that are replaced by mechanical prosthetics. There are several variants, and all have various colors matching one of four specific alignments (with one exception, see below). These Fiends are known for possessing large amounts of Health and are generally slow compared to smaller-sized Fiends. Their huge stature makes them immune to being Stunned but can still be affected by other Status Ailments (aside from their own matching Affinity's ailment, if non-Generic). Defeating an Obese-Type generally wields a plethora of loot.

Variants

Standard

A standard Obese-Type Fiend appears as a large humanoid mutant without clothing, sporting thin strands of long hair, and is outfitted with a sort of "nozzle" on its mouth. An Obese-Type will walk around slowly and once an enemy draws near, the fiend will regurgitate a spray of harmful substances in front of itself. The beast may also perform a slow sumo-like charge to chase down their foes, though hitting an object or solid obstacle will cause them to recoil, halting their advancement. Their massive size demonstrates their high tolerance to weapons damage. There are four different colorations of Obese-Types, to signify their Affinity. Their sprayable stomach acid's color also reflects this.

The first one of these Fiends is encountered as a Boss in the first Mission. They later appear as an occasional common enemy in certain areas of Missions.

Armored

A large armored Obese-Type enemy is first encountered at the park, fought as a boss. This Obese-Type does not spew globs, possesses lots of armor plating granting it extremely high tolerance to damage (more than the Standard Obese-Type), and has its right arm configured into a retractable spiked discus known as an "electromagnetic yo-yo"[4]. Instead of the usual stomp, this version can perform a large belly slam, which is essentially the same but grants the boss more maneuverability when performing the slam, allowing the beast to reach great distances to strike at its foe. Its sumo charge is also much faster and accurate than the standard Obese-Type's. The yo-yo can be launched either straightforward or in a sweep. When at mid-ranges, an armored Obese may perform a quick bump to push away the hero (non-lethally) and gain minor close-range distancing. It is possible to "down" this enemy and if successful, the Armored Obese will lay on its back for a brief moment before getting back up.

These armor variants are later encountered as normal enemies. While the boss variant is a Generic affinity type, all four alignment-colored foes can be encountered as normal enemies. In some instances, these enemies may appear in pairs or alongside other large enemies. In Exploration Missions, these foes may appear as Boss enemies.

During the battle against Taka, a special armored Obese-Type enemy is fought twice. While identical to the armored Obese, this fiend wears a blue armor (much like the OHM variant), has a differently colored head/eyes, and replaces the discus with a noticeably large anchor. The only new attack this enemy possesses is a swift close-range massive swing with its anchor. This attack is performed when hugging close to the enemy, but this Obese-Type will usually not perform this attack twice in a row, unless its alternate attack was interrupted somehow. Despite the blue armor, this enemy is a Generic Affinity (not OHM, meaning it can be paralyzed).

Tanker

Beginning with Mission Rank 4, a newer variation of Obese-Type appears as a common enemy. These Obese fiends appear mostly similar to standard variants minus a "muzzle" and notably will carry a noticeable tanker-like backpack with severed tubes. These tubes will constantly leak liquid on the floor whenever the Obese-Type Fiend moves or performs a slam. This Obese-Type Fiend can perform a ground slam when a character is close, in order to repel them away. They may also perform a sumo charge, which unleashed minor fluid to leak out, but if it did not recoil, the behemoth will shortly follow up with a large belly slam, releasing a large splash of fluid surrounding it for a brief time. Their sumo charge is faster than the standard Obese-Type but not as speedy or agile as an armored Obese-Type's, mainly due to the Tanker style's charge being more straightforward launched. Close-range weapons are difficult to use against these Fiends due to their constant fluids surrounding them. There are only three types of this Obese Fiend, to signify all but the Generic Affinity.

This Obese-Type can be seen during the game's introduction cutscene, possibly foreshadowing this enemy in advance. They may appear as Boss enemies in Exploration Missions (except in Chaos Finale).

Shadow

Note: This enemy only appears in updated/later revisions of Rogue Corps.

A dark-clad Obese with white hair and red eyes. It is an enemy reserved for "boss-type" encounters and serves as the main boss of Megaton Skyscraper. This Obese-Type is similar to the standard variant but with a massive power boost. Notably, its mouthpiece is a ring with eight evenly spaced trumpet-shaped extensions jutting out. This allows the beast to fire globs at amazing distances and quantity. Its mechanical hands also lack fingers, appearing closer to small cannons or miniguns. These hand attachments allow it to fling multiple globs of varying non-Generic Affinity from great distances. Although it possesses attacks of all Affinity types, the creature itself is of a Generic Affinity, and thus is able to be affected by Status Ailments, though only of non-Generic ailments due to being immune to Stun (like all other Obese-Type variants). The Shadow variants possess the highest amount of Health of all Obese-Type variants, comparable to an Armored Obese-Type's HP, if not higher than this.

Battle

In Megaton Skyscraper, the boss enters the area by jumping down a Fiendish tower, smashing a Navy Chopper on its way down. The boss is fenced off from the heroes and always appears in a center stage of the arena. The boss can fire sprays of either Ohmeric, Pyro, or Venom Affinity in a broad and quick sweeps or spews, but only one affinity per attack. The boss may sometimes perform a belly slam that causes a long-range shockwave to disperse that must be jumped over or Dodged. When its health is low by 1/4, it can summon turrets temporarily to make the battle harder. At 1/2 HP, MiniBugs may appear at times. When its health has lost 3/4, the turret's patterns become more intricate, and some may also fire Generic aligned spread bullets. Some turrets will also appear inside the area where the hero walks around.

Outside of Megaton Skyscraper, this behemoth is encountered as a normal "boss-like" enemy in several Missions, behaving much like other Obese-Type enemies while retaining its end-boss attacks minus its turret summon. In these common non-boss encounters, the Shadow Obese may feel somewhat slower than its end-boss appearance primarily due to its lack of ground movement. The tradeoff to this, however, is that the Shadow Obese is commonly partnered with a deadly Shadow Ninja-Type Fiend. In Chaos Finale, the Shadow Obese-Type appears as a random boss-enemy for one of three boss rooms, paired alongside a single Shadow Ninja-Type in each room and the and the occasional infinite Fiends swarm. A pair of Shadow Obese-Type are also fought at the end of What is this place?, also alongside several Shadow Ninja-Type Fiends. Perhaps due to its programming, sometimes a Shadow Obese-Type fought outside Megaton Skyscraper may not attack at all and remain idle, aside from only using its shockwave slam. This tends to happen often when characters are directly behind the Obese-Type enemy, as its somewhat slow rotational movements keep it easily out of harmful attack ranges.
